The English Electric Lightning (later BAC Lightning) remains the only all-British fighter aircraft capable of sustained Mach 2 flight, earning its reputation as a legendary Cold War interceptor. Famous for its unprecedented rate of climb pilots famously described it as “being saddled to a skyrocket” the Lightning was a point-defence marvel designed to counter Soviet bomber threats to the RAF.
Its radical design featured a unique vertical, staggered configuration for its twin Rolls-Royce Avon jet engines to minimize drag, enabling its blistering speed and rapid ascent to high-altitude. Though hampered by limited range, this powerful, iconic British fighter jet secured its place in aviation history, serving on the front line until 1988 with both the Royal Air Force and Royal Saudi Air Force.
