Description

Target Berlin: The Bomber Offensive

This sombre and moving limited edition print by Michael Rondot, titled Target Berlin, captures a powerful moment over the North Norfolk coast. The painting portrays outbound Avro Lancaster’s at sunset as a target-bound Pathfinder Force Mosquito overtakes them. Specifically, the featured aircraft is Lancaster VN-B of No. 50 Squadron, RAF Skellingthorpe. This limited edition print serves as a tribute to the crews who flew during the height of the strategic bombing offensive. You can find this and other masterpieces in our Heritage Collection of fine art.

The Lancaster evolved from the twin-engine Avro Manchester to become the RAF’s premier heavy bomber. Indeed, designer Roy Chadwick utilized four Rolls-Royce Merlin engines to give the aircraft unmatched lift and reliability. The “Lanc” featured a massive, unobstructed bomb bay. This allowed it to carry the RAF’s largest ordnance, including the 22,000 lb “Grand Slam” earthquake bomb. Notably, the type flew over 156,000 sorties and delivered over 600,000 tons of bombs. This limited edition print celebrates the versatility of an aircraft that also famously carried the “bouncing bomb” during the Dambusters raid.

Leading the Way: The Pathfinder Force

In Rondot’s portrayal, a de Havilland Mosquito from the Pathfinder Force (PFF) races ahead of the main bomber stream. Specifically, the Pathfinders acted as the elite navigators of Bomber Command. They located and marked targets with colored flares to guide the main force for maximum accuracy. Furthermore, the Mosquito’s wooden construction and high speed made it nearly immune to conventional interception. This limited edition print perfectly illustrates the cooperation between the heavy “Main Force” and the specialized PFF units that “lit the way” for victory.  To view the technical history of the aircraft used in this raid, visit the RAF Museum website.
