The Hawker Sea Fury: The Royal Navy’s Ultimate Piston Fighter
The Hawker Sea Fury stands as the last propeller-driven fighter to serve with the Royal Navy. Developed by Hawker Aircraft during the Second World War, it entered service in 1947. Specifically, the aircraft originated from a requirement for a “Light Tempest Fighter.” While the RAF cancelled its initial order, the Royal Navy adopted the type to replace its aging carrier fleet. This limited edition print captures the Sea Fury in its finest hour during the Korean War. If you appreciate historic naval aviation, explore our full Royal Navy Collection.
A Limited Edition Print Signed by ‘Hoagy’ Carmichael
This historic limited edition print depicts the legendary dogfight over Pyongyang on 9 August 1952. Lead by Peter ‘Hoagy’ Carmichael, four Sea Furies from 802 Naval Squadron engaged eight enemy MiG-15 jets. Remarkably, the piston-engined Sea Furies shot down one MiG and damaged two others. This event is widely believed to be the first victory of a propeller aircraft over a jet fighter in the Korean War. Each print in this edition is personally hand-signed by Commander Peter ‘Hoagy’ Carmichael.
Engineering the “Light Tempest” Design
The Sea Fury shared many design similarities with the preceding Hawker Tempest. However, engineers significantly modified the wings and fuselage to reduce weight and improve agility. The production version utilized the incredibly powerful Bristol Centaurus radial engine. Additionally, it carried four wing-mounted Hispano V cannons for devastating firepower. While originally a pure fighter, the definitive FB.11 variant became a highly effective fighter-bomber. You can learn more about the Sea Fury from the FB11 variant that is operated by Navy Wings Heritage.
Global Service and Combat Success
The Sea Fury attracted international orders from countries like Australia, Canada, and the Netherlands. Indeed, it proved to be a popular export due to its ruggedness and ease of maintenance. During the Korean War, it operated from carriers like HMS Ocean and HMAS Sydney. Furthermore, the aircraft saw action during the 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion with the Cuban Air Force. Consequently, the Sea Fury earned a reputation as one of the most capable piston-engined fighters ever built.
