Fighters in the Blood tells two parallel stories: that of Second World War Spitfire pilot “Robbie” Robertson and the later RAF career of his son, Air Marshal G A “Black” Robertson.
The narrative combines Black Robertson’s recollections with material recorded by his father and extracts from around 300 wartime letters. Robbie’s combat career ended after he was shot down and lost an eye, while his son went on to serve for nearly 36 years.
The book also reflects on Black Robertson’s service with the USAF, leadership and the contrast between a father tested in combat and a son who trained throughout the Cold War without being called upon to fight.
