Philip E. West’s Honour the Brave portrays an RF-8G Crusader returning to USS Coral Sea following a day of combat operations during the Vietnam War.
Unlike the fighter versions of the Crusader, the reconnaissance “photo-bird” was unarmed apart from its cameras and film. Its pilots ranged widely to gather post-strike photography and other reconnaissance information for the fleet.
The original product record places USS Coral Sea among the attack and anti-submarine carriers deployed to the Gulf of Tonkin and uses the scene to recognise the service of their crews.
