No Room for Error – The Story Behind the Print
In July 1945, Captain Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown launched the prototype Supermarine Seafire Mk 45, TM379, from the deck of the Royal Navy trials carrier HMS Pretoria Castle. Unlike operational aircraft carriers, a trials carrier would normally have a clear flight deck for testing. On this occasion, after the aircraft launched, the ship’s crew came onto the deck to check its surface and remove anything that might obstruct a landing.
TM379 was the first prototype Seafire Mk 45, fitted with a Rotol contra-rotating propeller, a modified fin and rudder, and a tailhook for carrier operations. Philip E. West’s painting captures the precision demanded of naval aviators during the development of the post-war Seafire.
Available in three signed and numbered editions, each supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity. The Artist Remarque and Artist Studio editions are additionally signed by Captain Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown.
