Michael Rondot’s Spitfire portrays a No. 41 Squadron aircraft during September 1940, when the Battle of Britain was placing enormous pressure on RAF fighter squadrons and their pilots.
No. 41 Squadron, whose motto is “Seek and Destroy”, was heavily engaged from July through to the end of October. The original product record notes that in one five-day period during early September the squadron lost six Spitfires, with three pilots killed and at least one seriously wounded.
By the end of October, the same record gives the squadron’s losses as ten pilots killed and twelve wounded in action. Rondot’s painting uses the aircraft and moody sky to focus attention on the human cost behind the familiar Spitfire image.
Rondot later had his own connection with No. 41 Squadron, flying Jaguars with the unit during the Gulf War.
