Valiant – The Story Behind the Print
Michael Rondot’s Valiant portrays Vickers Valiant XD818 taking off against the backdrop of a V-Force dispersal airfield, with the characteristic black smoke from its four Avon engines.
XD818 has a particularly important place in British aviation history. Captained by Wing Commander Ken Hubbard of No. 49 Squadron, the aircraft dropped Britain’s first hydrogen bomb at Christmas Island on 15 May 1957. It is now preserved at the RAF Museum as the last surviving Valiant.
The edition brings together three signatures closely connected with the aircraft and the V-Force: Valiant chief designer Sir George Edwards OM CBE FRS; Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Michael Beetham GCB CBE DFC AFC; and Group Captain Ken Hubbard OBE DFC AFC.
