Anthony Saunders’ The Sundowners portrays an F-4 Phantom of VF-111 launching from USS Coral Sea during operations in the Gulf of Tonkin.
The aircraft is NL201, call sign “Old Nick Two Zero One”, flown on 6 March 1972 by Lieutenant Garry L. Weigand with Radar Intercept Officer Lieutenant (jg) William C. Freckleton.
The crew formed part of a two-aircraft team sent to intercept MiGs following an encounter involving Phantoms escorting an RA-5C Vigilante reconnaissance aircraft. Weigand subsequently engaged a MiG-17 and downed it with a Sidewinder missile.
The artwork was Anthony Saunders’ first jet painting and is signed by the artist.
