Hawk Country places the RAF’s fast-jet trainer in the environment with which it became closely associated: low-level flying through the Welsh valleys.
A pair of Hawks leads the scene while other aircraft manoeuvre behind them, giving Michael Rondot’s painting a sense of the busy training environment experienced by generations of fast-jet students.
The Hawk emerged from the RAF requirement for a new fast-jet trainer to replace the Folland Gnat. Hawker Siddeley’s HS.1182 was selected in 1971, with the principal contract for 175 aircraft signed the following year.
