Michael Rondot’s Coup De Grace captures a dramatic moment from the 1991 Gulf War, as two RAF Jaguars attack an Iraqi Polnocny-class landing ship in the Persian Gulf. Operating from Al-Muharraq in Bahrain, the Jaguar force flew demanding missions at long range in extreme heat and difficult desert conditions.
The scene depicts the attack carried out by Group Captain William Pixton DFC AFC and Flight Lieutenant Peter Tholen after the vessel was identified during a low-level reconnaissance pass. The Jaguars attacked with CRV-7 rockets and 30mm cannon fire, and Rondot’s painting captures both the weathered “desert pink” aircraft and the intensity of the action below.
The RAF Jaguar detachment went on to fly 618 missions during the conflict without a single combat loss. Its combination of ruggedness, reliability and low-level performance made the Jaguar particularly well suited to the demanding conditions of Operation Desert Storm.
What makes Coup De Grace especially significant for collectors is its direct connection with the mission itself. The edition is signed by Michael Rondot together with Group Captain William Pixton DFC AFC and Flight Lieutenant Peter Tholen – the two pilots who flew the attack depicted in the painting. The edition is limited to 500 numbered prints, with selected remarque editions featuring an original hand-drawn pencil sketch.
