Description

The Growler – The Story Behind the Print

Michael Rondot’s The Growler brings together two distinctive Cold War RAF aircraft over the North Sea: an Avro Shackleton AEW2 and a pair of “Tremblers” F-4 Phantoms from No. 111 Squadron, RAF Leuchars.

The Shackleton served the RAF for four decades, beginning in maritime patrol and anti-submarine roles before adapted aircraft took on airborne early warning duties. From 1971, No. 8 Squadron’s Shackleton AEW aircraft became part of the UK Air Defence Force, continuing in that role for nearly 20 years.

Its four Rolls-Royce Griffon engines gave the Shackleton a sound as distinctive as its appearance, inspiring the title of Rondot’s painting. Pairing it with 111 Squadron Phantoms creates a scene strongly associated with Britain’s Cold War air-defence network.

The print is artist signed, with selected artist’s proofs and remarque editions carrying additional signatures from RAF personnel listed above.
