Black Knights Over China Lake captures RAF No. 17 (Reserve) Squadron Typhoon FGR4s during an important period in the development of the RAF’s frontline Typhoon force. Michael Rondot portrays the aircraft over China Lake, California, with one configured for air defence and another carrying an air-to-ground precision-guided-munition fit.
No. 17 (R) Squadron played a significant role in bringing Typhoon into RAF service as the type’s Operational Evaluation Unit. Based at RAF Coningsby, the squadron was responsible for evaluating the aircraft, its systems and developing capabilities as Typhoon progressed from an air-defence fighter towards the multirole aircraft familiar today.
Once Typhoon had become fully operational, the squadron’s evaluation responsibilities were transferred to No. 41 Test and Evaluation Squadron. No. 17 Squadron subsequently took on a new test and evaluation role with the F-35B Lightning.
