Philip E. West’s Combat Over Korea portrays an encounter between the F-86 Sabre and MiG-15 during the closing stages of the Korean War.
On 19 July 1953, John Glenn’s flight of four F-86s encountered a much larger group of MiGs. The original product record describes Glenn pursuing and shooting down a MiG during the engagement, the second of three enemy aircraft credited to him during the conflict.
Glenn later became an astronaut and in 1962 became the first American to orbit the Earth, giving the scene an additional connection with post-war aviation and spaceflight history.
