MiG Encounter – The Story Behind the Print

Anthony Saunders’ MiG Encounter portrays the F-4C Phantom during one of the major air battles fought by the USAF 8th Tactical Fighter Wing over North Vietnam.

On 20 May 1967, Colonel Robin Olds led eight Phantoms north of Hai Phong where they encountered a large group of MiG-17s. During the engagement Olds and his Weapon Systems Officer, First Lieutenant Stephen B. Croker, were credited with destroying two MiG-17s.

Olds had taken command of the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing at Ubon in 1966. By the time he relinquished command the following year, the “Wolfpack” had established a formidable combat record.

The print is signed by artist Anthony Saunders.
