Phantom Farewell – The Story Behind the Print
In Phantom Farewell, renowned aviation artist Michael Rondot captures a Royal Air Force F-4 Phantom FGR2 landing in brilliant sunshine. The scene is a tribute to a fighter whose distinctive shape, formidable performance and unmistakable presence left a lasting impression on those who flew, maintained and watched it.
The Phantom entered RAF service during the Cold War, initially undertaking strike and ground-attack duties before becoming a mainstay of air defence. Operating in the UK and Germany, RAF Phantoms helped safeguard British and NATO airspace. The FGR2 also served in the Falkland Islands, where the type contributed to air defence following the 1982 conflict.
With its two powerful Rolls-Royce Spey engines, tandem cockpit and imposing silhouette, the British Phantom was unlike any other RAF fighter. Its retirement from RAF service in 1992 marked the end of a remarkable chapter in British military aviation, but its reputation lives on among former aircrew, ground crew and enthusiasts.
Rondot’s painting captures that enduring affection: not simply the end of an aircraft’s operational career, but a farewell to an unmistakable symbol of Cold War aviation.
