The formation is led by Colonel Jack Broughton, whose account of the mission in the original product record emphasises his decision to fly the route according to the conditions and tactical demands faced by the crews.
The F-105 became closely associated with the demanding strike missions flown over North Vietnam, and Taylor’s painting concentrates on the aircraft at low level in the environment in which many of those missions were conducted.
