Description

Second to None – The Story Behind the Print

Michael Rondot’s Second to None captures a pair of Panavia Tornados returning to RAF Marham in typically unforgiving British weather. The lead aircraft touches down on a rain-soaked runway while the second Tornado is partly obscured by the cloud of spray behind it.

Rather than depicting the Tornado in combat, Rondot focuses on a familiar part of squadron life: getting home at the end of a wet winter flying day before worsening crosswinds and driving rain close the airfield. The result combines the purposeful appearance of the Tornado with a scene that will be immediately recognisable to many who served on RAF stations.

The print has a particularly strong connection with No. II (AC) Squadron. Artist’s proofs, publisher’s proofs and remarque editions are signed by eight former Commanding Officers of the squadron, representing service across aircraft including the Spitfire, Meteor, Hunter, Phantom, Jaguar and Tornado.
