Before hostilities began, Hornets flew round-the-clock Combat Air Patrols providing cover for Allied fleets. Once the air campaign started, US Navy and Marine Corps F/A-18s were among the aircraft crossing the Iraqi border and remained heavily involved throughout the conflict.
The Hornet’s missions included escort and fighter sweeps, bombing and defence suppression. The original product record notes more than 10,000 sorties and 25,000 flight hours during Desert Storm, together with two Iraqi MiG-21s shot down.
