Michael Rondot’s The First Strike depicts RAF Eurofighter Typhoons on Operation Shader, armed for a strike against targets in the Omar oilfields complex. Smoke from a recent attack drifts across the background, placing the aircraft firmly within their operational setting.
The painting represents the Typhoon units involved in Operation Shader and records an important stage in the aircraft’s RAF service. In December 2015, Typhoon aircraft, engineering personnel and ground support deployed to RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus and began Air Interdiction and Close Air Support missions. On 4 December, Typhoons struck the Omar Oilfield using Paveway IV weapons.
Rondot shows the aircraft carrying Paveway IV precision-guided bombs, Litening III targeting and reconnaissance pods, together with AMRAAM and ASRAAM air-to-air missiles. The configuration underlines the Typhoon’s multirole capability during deployed operations.
